Jersey City, N.J.<\/strong> \u2013 September 9, 2021 \u2013<\/strong> Saint Peter\u2019s University today announced that it has entered a partnership agreement with Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) which will make it easier for Saint Peter\u2019s students to continue their education at RUSVM. Through the agreement, Saint Peter\u2019s students will be eligible for the Ross Vet Articulation Partner Scholarship for Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), a scholarship that was established by RUSVM to diversify the next generation of veterinarians and to create pathways for underrepresented minority students to pursue their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.<\/p>\n

Saint Peter\u2019s has been designated a HSI for more than 20 years and is one of two institutions to partner with RUSVM. The scholarship is available to students currently attending partner institutions who wish to begin the DVM program in the 2021-22 school year. The three-semester partial scholarship is equal to one total semester of tuition, and it includes a flight credit to the RUSVM campus in St. Kitts and free housing on campus for the first semester. A total of five scholarships are available for applicants from RUSVM\u2019s HSI partner institutions.<\/p>\n

“The incredible diversity of the Saint Peter\u2019s student population is just one of the things that makes the University so special,” said Frederick Bonato, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs at Saint Peter’s University. \u201cWe are proud to enter this partnership with RUSVM to provide our students with as many opportunities as possible to meet their education and career goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a HSI, Saint Peter\u2019s has been consistently recognized for its commitment to serving Latino students. In 2016 Saint Peter\u2019s was awarded the Title III HSI STEM grant for $3.8 million to support SURGE (STEM Undergraduate Retention, Graduation and Empowerment) that provides opportunities for research. In 2018 Saint Peter\u2019s also received the NSF\u2019s first ever Hispanic-serving grant for $1.5 million to build STEM internship experiences. In 2019, Saint Peter\u2019s was selected as one of 20 nationwide finalists to earn a Seal of\u00a0Excelencia<\/em>\u00a0certification from Excelencia in Education, a nonprofit organization that seeks to accelerate Latino student success in higher education.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis articulation scholarship is another notable example of how RUSVM is committed to diversifying the veterinary medicine workforce,\u201d said Sean Callanan, MVB, CERTVR, MRCVS, Ph.D., FRCPATH, DIPLECVP, dean of RUSVM. \u201cBy partnering with institutions and organizations that serve a diverse population of students, we can continue to create a community of learners who will be representative of the communities they go on to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the last academic year, 15% of currently enrolled students at RUSVM identified as LatinX\/Hispanic, compared with only 6.1% of all students enrolled in U.S. DVM programs, according to the American Association of Veterinary Medicine Colleges<\/a>. This scholarship initiative builds on other RUSVM efforts to contribute to diversifying the veterinarian workforce.<\/p>\n
