As a proud Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) for over 25 years, Saint Peter’s University celebrates our students, faculty, and staff and their contributions this Hispanic Heritage month. Starting on September 15, 2026 through October 15, 2026, this year’s theme for the month is We asked leaders in our community of Hispanic heritage what this means to them, the role higher education plays, and how their work with students shapes that future. 

Como una orgullosa Institución al Servicio de los Hispanos (HSI, por sus siglas en inglés) desde hace más de 25 años, Saint Peter’s University celebra a sus estudiantes, docentes y personal, así como sus contribuciones, durante este Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre de 2026, el tema de este año es Preguntamos a líderes de nuestra comunidad de origen hispano qué significa esto para ellos, qué papel desempeña la educación superior y cómo su trabajo con los estudiantes moldea ese futuro.

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates a legacy of resilience, hope and progress, and inspires me to imagine what is possible for the future. At Saint Peter’s, I am committed to expanding opportunity while remaining rooted in our Catholic and Jesuit tradition, so that every student can become a pioneer of change and help transform communities; one person and one family at a time.

El Mes de la Herencia Hispana celebra un legado de resiliencia, esperanza y progreso, y me inspira a imaginar lo que es posible para el futuro. En Saint Peter’s, estoy comprometido con ampliar las oportunidades, manteniéndonos fieles a nuestra tradición Católica y Jesuita, para que cada estudiante pueda convertirse en un pionero del cambio y ayudar a transformar nuestras comunidades; una persona y una familia a la vez.

Shaping the future together means finding a way to bridge where we came from and where our universities (and in many ways our country) are going. Hispanic Americans in higher education can serve as visionaries, or leaders but will ALWAYS be seen as mentors; as we need to use our roles to help pave the way and aid in cross-cultural collaboration, and ensure the next generation is ready to drive progress and innovation in a multicultural society. This can be tough, since Hispanic-Americans are often seen as a cultural monolith, but the role each of us carries forward must be broad enough for everyone to be included, while being true to where we came from.

Para poder crear un futuro juntos debemos de poder encontrar la manera de actuar como un nexo entre nuestras raíces y el futuro hacia el cual se dirigen nuestras universidades (y, en gran medida, nuestro país). Los hispanoamericanos en educación terciaria podemos actuar como visionarios o líderes, pero SIEMPRE seremos percibidos como mentores. Necesitamos aprovechar nuestras posiciones para abrir camino, facilitar la colaboración intercultural y de esta forma asegurarnos que las próximas generaciones estén listas para impulsar el progreso y la innovación en una sociedad tan multicultural como la nuestra. Honestamente, esta no es tarea fácil, ya que a menudo, a los hispanoamericanos, somos vistos como un grupo homogéneo, pero el rol que cada uno de nosotros asume debe ser lo suficientemente amplio como para incluir a la mayor cantidad de personas posibles, esto, sin perder nunca la esencia de dónde venimos.

Whenever a student asks what I do, I respond: “I change the world.” Then I add: “And your curiosity and creativity and eventually your successful career is how I change the world. Whether you become a banker or a lawyer or a teacher or a nurse–no matter what you eventually do, you were brought here to make the world a better place.”

Cada vez que un estudiante me pregunta sobre me trabajo, respondo: «Cambio el mundo». Entonces también digo: «Y tu curiosidad, tu creatividad y, con el tiempo, tu exitosa carrera son la forma en que cambio el mundo. Ya sea que te conviertas en banquero, abogado, maestro o enfermero —sin importar a qué te dediques finalmente—, has llegado aquí para hacer del mundo un lugar mejor».

By bringing Saint Peter’s first fully online Spanish MBA to life and building dual-degree partnerships across Latin America, I meet our students right where they are. Whether we’re connecting in the virtual classroom or building professional networks across borders, my goal is to create a space where Spanish-speaking scholars feel empowered, supported, and ready to lead on a global scale.

Al dar vida a la primera Maestría en Administración de Empresas (MBA) completamente virtual en español de Saint Peter’s y desarrollar alianzas de doble titulación en toda América Latina, me encuentro con nuestros estudiantes exactamente donde están. Ya sea conectando en el aula virtual o creando redes profesionales transfronterizas, mi objetivo es construir un espacio donde los académicos hispanohablantes se sientan empoderados, respaldados y listos para liderar a escala global.

I tell my students that their futures are not predestined, but that they have the tools to create their futures. I encourage students to approach problems from different perspectives, to draw upon the unique insights and experiences rooted in their family cultures. One’s background, ideas and lived experiences are valuable sources of knowledge that can inspire creative ways of problem-solving. I challenge students not to shy away from using these perspectives, but rather to have the confidence to recognize and embrace them as strengths. 

Les planteo a mis estudiantes que su futuro no está predeterminado, sino que poseen las herramientas y capacidades necesarias para construirlo de manera consciente y deliberada.  Los motivo a analizar los problemas desde perspectivas diferentes y a recurrir a los conocimientos, valores y experiencias particulares que se derivan de sus respectivas culturas familiares. El contexto sociocultural de cada individuo, así como sus ideas y experiencias vividas constituyen valiosas fuentes de conocimiento que pueden contribuir al desarrollo de enfoques creativos para la resolución de problemas. Por ello, invito a mis estudiantes a no rehuir estas perspectivas, sino a tener la confianza para reconocerlas e incorporarlas con confianza como fortalezas.
